刊物原文：In the early 1920s Ernest Heminway was a little-known journalist slumming around Europe and getting into absinthe-fuelled scrapes.

大意参考：20世纪20年代初，欧内斯特·海明威还只是个小有名气的作家，在欧洲颠沛流离，并因为喝苦艾酒惹出不少事端。

little-known not widely known; not famed; 作形容词，鲜为人知的

slum to spend time in places or conditions that are much worse than those you used to; 做动词指的是过穷日子（informal），做名词指的是贫民窟，a slum area

get into scrapes 陷入麻烦，scrape 作名词指的是困境，窘境，If you are in a scrape, you are in a difficult situation which you have caused yourself.

同学们应该比较熟悉 scrape 做动词刮坏，可能最熟悉的是 scrape 表示艰难取得，勉强获得，to manage to win or to get sth with difficulty，考研英语则可能会用到，scrape a pass in the exam, 考试勉强及格，scrape a living，勉强维持生计

Scrape by on sth 依靠……勉强维持生计，糊口

Scrape in 勉强获得（工作、入学资格等）scrape into the semi-finals 勉强挤进半决赛
